Castilleja cruenta standl
By Penelope Gottlieb
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A painting by Penelope Gottlieb. "Castilleja cruenta standl" is a contemporary painting, ink, acrylic and oil on canvas panel in a variety of bright, bold colors by American artist Penelope Gottlieb. After receiving her BFA from the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, Penelope Gottlieb went on to earn her MFA from the University of California in Santa Barbara where she currently lives and works. Gottlieb’s artistic repertoire is thoroughly modern and includes innovative paintings as well as compelling media design, for which she received an Emmy in the field of motion picture title design in 1993. Gottlieb’s more recent works showcase a unique synthesis of her modern graphic design background and the vintage botanical renderings of natural scientists. However, her paintings are also unique in their perspective on the traditional floral still life. Stylized flora and fauna are depicted as emanating from a comic book explosion, illustrating what the artist refers to as “the dire state of the planet” as faced with species extinction and the resulting biological and ecological ramifications. These violent representations of the artistically typified placid natural world are intended as “visual eulogies for lost plant life.” The particular specimens that Gottlieb depicts are in fact extinct and she is able to recreate them only from historical drawings and botanist’s descriptions. Although avant-garde and aesthetically unique, Gottlieb’s paintings delineate clear influences from the renowned artists of Pop and Expressionist art. The composition of many of her paintings is reminiscent of Kandinsky’s canvas-filling outpours while her bold color palette and black outlines recall Lichtenstein’s comic book panels. Her work is also closely related to a more contemporary group of artists, including Alexis Rockman...

Set of 3 Empoli Vases Hobnail Pattern Cased Glass Mid Century
By Vetrerie di Empoli, Empoli
Located in Bad Säckingen, DE
The set of three different Empoli vases with a hobnail pattern showcases the charm and craftsmanship of mid-century Italian glassmaking. Empoli is a region in Tuscany, Italy, renowned for its long tradition of producing high-quality glassware. Each vase in the set boasts a distinctive hobnail pattern, which consists of small, rounded, and raised glass beads covering the surface in a regular and decorative arrangement. This textured pattern adds a delightful tactile element to the vases, enhancing their visual appeal. The vases are made using the cased glass technique, where several layers of different colored glass are fused together. In this case each vase consists of three layers, translucent outer and inner layer in red, violet and ochre and an opaque white middle layer. This process creates a mesmerizing depth of color, as the light interacts with the multiple glass layers. The set includes three vases of varying heights and shapes, offering a dynamic and versatile display. The mid-century design aesthetic prevalent in this era is likely reflected in the vases' sleek and elegant silhouettes. The colors chosen for the vases, including red, violet, and ochre, are evocative of the warm and vibrant hues commonly associated with mid-century decor. These colors not only add a touch of nostalgia but also create a bold and captivating visual impact. Empoli glassware...

Large Japanese Wood Board Ema Namban Depicting a Portuguese Ship Edo period
Located in Stockholm, SE
An Ema is a votive plaque people hang in a "dedication area", at a Shinto shrine, with their wish to the gods. Wishes usually would revolve around health, love, career, prosperity, and academic achievement and safe voyage. This wood board possess substantial historical value because they display scenes of the first European activities in Japan. Some of the most intriguing are ships: the European ships of the Age of Discovery. Such paintings were created by skillful Japanese traditional painters who had the utmost respect for detail, and yet the European ships they depicted are often anachronistic and strangely. I am not able to date this tempera painting precisely and believe this to be late Edo period (late 18th - early 19th century). Very well produced by anonymous painter. Antique tempera...

Horses and stagecoach winter/snow scene, oil painting, by John Richard Worsdale
Located in York, GB
A fine antique oil painting of horses pulling a stagecoach in snow , by John richard Worsdale (1869-1947) The artist portrays this powerful scene with an extensive view, featuring the stagecoach pulled by 4 horses and a village scene behind with buildings and peopla with another coach behind. oil on canvas, signed lower left, housed in a gilt frame. The size of the painting is approx 74 cms x 49 cms, whilst framed size is 90cm x 67cm. The painting is in very good condition, relined, with only some minor craquelure to the skyline, The frame appears original and is also in good condition with only minor age wear. Provenance: The E. W. Towler Collection, formerly of Glympton Park, Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Eric W. Towler was a remarkable man. He was born in 1900 and left school at the age of 12 to work in a Yorkshire pit and through a lifetime of hard work, self-improvement, luck and a refusal to limit his horizons achieved many of his aspirations. As a Yorkshireman through and through, he believed in ‘spending the brass in his pocket’ and over time he was successful enough to acquire enough ‘brass’ to enable his purchase of Glympton Park and furnish it as a traditional country house with all the trappings – in his case collections of antique furniture...

French Folk Art Hand Carved Painted Whimsical Childrens Cat Chair Gerard Rigot
Located in Surfside, FL
Gerard Rigot (France, 1929-) Animeubles, Child's Chair Circa, 1980's Folk art, hand carved chair in the form of a cat. Hand signed on bottom Endorsed by the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris. Dimensions: Measures 23" x 19" x 13" The chair is made from softwood, probably pine, alder, ash, birch or hornbeam. It stands on four legs and has a simple D-shaped form. A carved cat’s head adorns the proper right arm, and an erect tail the proper left. The legs of the chair are shaped at the feet to resemble a cat’s paws. The whole chair is painted in simple, dilute oil colours, predominantly a soft red, with a green gray seat and blue-white stripes on the tail and body. The facial features are highlighted. The artist’s signature is painted in black on the underside of the seat. Gerard Rigot was born in the suburbs of Paris in 1929, and began sculpting and painting whimsical fantastic wood furniture after moving to the countryside at the age of 49. Before becoming a full-time artist in the late-1970s, Rigot had a varied career including stints as a soldier and a photography assistant, his practice being particularly influenced by a period he spent working as a teacher in Algeria. When the painter Gerard Rigot bought a farmhouse in Toulouse, France, he began to make furniture. Inspired by his cat and using native oak and pine, he carved and painted playfull naive animal...

Purple Stripe
By Louise Nevelson
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this evocative print by the inimitable Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson is renowned for her mysterious and complex artworks. She was an active printmaker, experimenting with different techniques and approaches while working with some of the best print-making studios in the United States and Italy. Many of the leading, ground-breaking American abstract artists experienced success in post-war Europe. Nevelson was notably well-embraced in Italy arguably because of parallels to Arte Povera in her work. She had an important and enduring connection to Italy, beginning with representing America at the Venice Biennale in 1962. Nevelson would then exhibit at the legendary Studio Marconi in Milan during the succeeding decades. This fruitful relationship led Nevelson to start working with Italian printmakers during the 1970s. This impressive aquatint is a paradigm of both the era and Nevelson's later printmaking, notable for its use of metallic elements, color, and collage. This work features unexpected shades of magenta, lime green, and rust, which punctuate her signature monochromatic black forms that sweep the surface of the page creating an intriguing architectural form. This work is an example from Nevelson's 1973 portfolio, "Aquatints Portfolio (B. 116)" which comprised six aquatints with metallic elements. Click here to see another example from this body of work. Over the last few years, there has been tremendous momentum in both interest and appreciation of Nevelson's work. In May of 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson's signature white construction sculptures...
