Simcha Even-Chen
Folding in Motion 11 by Simcha Even-Chen - Porcelain sculpture, orange lines

2021

About the Item

Folding in Motion 11 is a unique paper porcelain sculpture by contemporary artist Simcha Even-Chen, dimensions are 16 × 30 × 12 cm (6.3 × 11.8 × 4.7 in). The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This sculpture is a part of the artist's most recent body of work, in which she uses paper porcelain—porcelain that has been given a 0.5% paper fiber addition for increased flexibility—to produce organic, dynamic, and natural shapes. The material's physical limits are tested (it collapses during firing), and the balance between the full and empty spaces produced by the shapes is experimented with. Although she assembles various components to create her sculptures, the final outcome after firing is always subject to surprise because of this collapsing process. This sculpture's use of colour is a key component that is likely to elicit an emotional or psychological response from the viewer. The surface's linear patterns direct the viewer's attention along the curves, emphasising the soft, light and fluid appearance.

    By Harumi Nakashima
    Located in St. Louis, MO
Japanese artist Harumi Nakashima creates free-form ceramic sculptures that feature organic, yet psychedelic characteristics. Nakashima, mostly known for beautifully structured, odd geometric shapes embellished with iconic polka dots, works with a level of intricacy that demonstrates the artist’s attention to detail. The sculptor often evokes the Sodeisha art movement, a 1940s reactionary effort against the dominion of Japan’s popular folk-craft styles (especially the traditional, functional aspects of Japanese pottery) and ceramics created for the purpose of tea ceremonies. Sodeisha, known for its modern take on traditional Japanese aesthetics, was disbanded in 1998. However, artists like Nakashima have thrived tremendously by incorporating Sodeisha references into their current pieces. A contemporary aesthetic and subtle, refined references to traditional Japanese pottery allow the works to be perceived aesthetically rather than functionally. "Internal Shape 09", Abstract...
