Inez Dunnick Smith
Vintage American Pennsylvania Farm Landscape; Signed Oil on Canvas, ca 1940’s

About the Item

Inez Dunnick Smith was a Pennsylvania artist who was active in the York area. She was born in 1902 and died in 1987. Smith was known for her landscapes, portraits and still lifes. This work is one of her best and most artistic, in my humble opinion. It depicts a farm property that is rendered in a modernist leaning style with a colorful palette typical of the 1940’s. Her use of pinks and yellows along with red, brown, green and blue makes for a lively scene. Although mainly post-impressionist, there are clearly modernist techniques such as planes and color shapes that tend to fracture the painting in a subtle manner. The summer scene is complete with cows, stream, barns and a variety of landscape elements. It is signed lower right, into the wet paint at the time of creation. The oil on canvas measures 18” x 24” and is housed in a stained wood frame of its period. The painting has been professionally cleaned and relined with very minor inpainting in spots. The frame may very well be hickory and measures 21 1/2” x 27 1/2” overall. It is very solid and has more weight than expected. The overall painting shows very well with bright colors and a pleasing period palette.

In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...
