Arthur Hoeber
Antique American Impressionist Landscape Painting - “Willow” by Arthur Hoeber

ca 1910

About the Item

This beautiful American Impressionist oil painting depicts a stately willow tree along the bank of a stream. Artist Arthur Hoeber (1854-1915) used a colorful palette combined with dabs of paint in an impressionist manner that was very popular around the turn of the century. Arthur Hoeber was born in Nutley, New Jersey in the middle of the nineteenth century. He studied first in New York and then went to England and France, influenced by popular styles of the late 19th century. Hoeber returned to America and Nutley. His paintings were tonalist and luminist at first but seemed to evolve to brighter and more impressionist works as he matured. This painting is from his later period and dates to the early years of the 20th century. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 12” x 16”. It is in very good condition with no issues to report. It is beautifully signed lower left and verso along with his studio address on Fifth Avenue in New York and the title “Willow”. The painting was framed by Foster Brothers in Boston, likely when it was originally purchased. Moreover, written on the upper stretcher is an owner’s name (Blanchard E. Pratt, 119 Fairmount Street in Lowell, Mass) who was likely the original purchaser. The gilt frame is in good condition, with a few dings here and there but overall very presentable. The outer measurements of the frame are 16” x 20”.

In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...
