1919 Waltham "Wandering Second" 15 Jewels with Stunning Movement

About the Item

I have a shameless commercial plug for my shop. Many of my watches were used in the filming of an Epic Film due to be released in May 2023. The studio selected my shop due to the authentic restoration couple with the time period of 1919-1926. I will mention two actors who are in the upcoming movie, Leonardo Di Capra and Robert Di Nero… more to come. It was an honor and validated my shop for its authentic restoration practices. What a treat! Have you ever run across a “Wandering Second” WW1 / Trench watch. But……it is not your ordinary offering, look at the gold colored screws and gold-colored wheels. What a treat. This combination is very difficult to source in operating condition today, so many have abused as Father Time has passed us by. This is a 15-jewel movement, this was better than most that were 7 jewels, it was more reliable. This style is called a cushion for its shape which was popular in the early wrist watch era. The often-housed round dials with no seconds or a traditional second hand at six o’clock. Many of the WW1 wrist watches use 0 size movements, see below was size reference. 5/0s 26.25 mm 1.033 in 1 130 in 4/0s 27.09 mm 1.067 in 1 115 in 3/0s 27.94 mm 1.100 in 1 110 in 2/0s 28.79 mm 1.133 in 1 215 in 0s 29.63 mm 1.167 in 1 16 in I used the terms Trench Watch. What exactly is that? History about Trench Watches What is a “Trench Watch” ? They were created using 3-0 and 0 size pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist. The watch movement companies would send their movements to independent jewelers, who in turn would select the cases to house the movement. So the ordering process might go like this. A customer walks into a jeweler, with the help of the jeweler, the customer selects a 15 jeweled movement, then they go on to the case selection. The jeweler may recommend a higher end case manufactures like Depollier, and then it is the style of case as many manufactures had several different styles. Once a complete selection was made, the jeweler put it together and delivered the watch. That is how many Trench Watches (wrist watches) were born in the early 1900's. The movements often came from women pocket watches because the wrist watch as we know was just being discovered. It is not uncommon to see various movements used in different cases, with various years. Remember the wrist watch was just being developed. They often have some of the following characteristics: Fixed or Wire Lug was common, occasionally as time passed us by, traditional lugs would be added in favor of using spring bars, traditional spring bar attachment as found in today’s watches. Case Material: Solid Gold - Sterling Silver - Silverode or Gold Filled were used. (This case lid snaps snug on the case. This is important to note as many cases were badly damaged by their owners over the past 100 years. *For more practical purposes, a special alloy was developed which went by several different names, such as, "Silveroid, Silverore, Silverode or Silverine. "Silveroid" appears to have become the standard name for this metal that consisted of 45% nickel, 54% copper and 1% manganese. Case Manufactures: There were many case manufacturers that made cases for Trench Watches. Some of the more well know were: Dennison (English Manufacturer) Illinois (not affiliated with the Illinois Watch Company) J Depollier and Sons, Wadsworth, Fahys, Philadelphia, Fortune and many more World War 1 was 1914 to 1918, that is the time frame of many Trench Watches. My shop was recently selected to supply vintage American watches for a premier movie starring some major actors and a world famous director. They were looking for authentic watches that would represent the time period from 1915-1926. It is a true story of events that took place during the 1920’s. The movie was Killers of The Flower Moon, I supplied many of the watches used in the movie for historical context. In addition, I was just selected to supply watches for a remake of a movie that first came out is 1936. That is happening right now I have been an avid vintage watch collector for years. My soft spot is 1900-1935 American watches. I have an active collection of about 60 pieces. I am constantly refining my collection as time ticks by. The ones that I do not wear very much get sold for other watches that may be hard to find. All my watches for sale are in above average condition, some are pristine. I pride myself in offering the best quality and reasonable prices. Remember, "Price is what you pay, value is what you get". What an amazing offering I have for you. If you have me saved or are following me, you will realize that I have offered only one or two like this before First I want to share with you that this is a hard to find 3/0 size, plus it is a rare “Hermetic” case design. Hermetic means the bezel and case back thread and unthread on and off. This is the crown jewel of this offering . Think 1930, WW1 had 12 years of peace. This has the offset crown in the corner of the case. I see this kind of watch once or twice a year. I see very few of these case as the years pass us by. Especially is the highly collectible B&B Royal Hermetic case. This is a sublime offering. The quiet but elegant military shadow box Waltham dial supports the time period of this watch. This is a beautiful example of the early wrist period with an awesome twist of an offset “Hermetic” case! It is a real treasure to own. The elegant Military is coveted for its easy to read look, simplicity and invokes the early watch period from 1910 to 1930’s. It is a real treasure to find one that has not been damaged through the years The case, read below for a definition, has done very well over the years. I look long and hard and usually pay a high premium for cases that are in great condition. This is the hard to find B&B Royal YGF 3/0 sized case size. Some Manufacturer History Bates and Bacon...

I really think I am a kid at heart. I get so excited to bring another rarity to istDibs. Part of the reason might be that it can take up to a year to complete a project. When it finally gets completed, well let’s say I become a kid. As the years have gone by, my tastes and watch offerings have been refined. There are some great sellers on this platform, I want to be different. I want to offer the unusual, the highly collectible, that hard to find vintage time pieces that has been restored, a watch that could be handed down to the next generation. I understand the value of a quality vintage wristwatch. In particular since some of mine are some of the earliest wristwatches dating back to the 1900’s. This treasure is a caliber 7 jeweled movement, this was considered one of the “Work Horses” back then. You have an opportunity to own it Us the pictures to help you with your description. Keep in mind that this watch is a few years young, it is not perfect! Let’s talk about this dial. To me, this is the crown jewel. The enamel dial is white, It has been carefully accented with gold accents below the numbers, the sublime design aesthetic are the bright leprechaun green dots above the numbers. The cherry on top of this watch sundae are the Louis Hands that finish off this treasure. For this that are new to collecting Trench or WW1 watches...

Welcome to Vintage Watch Corner. First a PSA (Public Service Announcement) Vintage Watch Corner was selected as the Vintage watch source to supply “period” watches (1918-1926) for a major motion picture. This picture is being filmed in Oklahoma as we speak. It is a validation of the authenticity of my restorations. What a great looking Elgin. This watch is from the late 1930’s, It is Elgin’s answer to the “waterproof” watch. The crystal has a gasket between the case and crystal, the case back has a gasket between the movement retainer ring and the case back, that by the way threads on. I love the oversized crown; it adds a distinguished look to a “functional watch. This watch was targeted for the outdoors person who wanted a watch that could withstand the elements, hence multiple gaskets and oversized crown. I love the two tone dial. It has a golden minute...

Thank you for dropping by. I have a sublime offering that is Art Deco through and through. Elgin, one of the prolific early American wrist watch manufacturers. The played a significant role during the early wristwatch era. This is just an example. This is an incredible survivor from two generations ago. This 1928, one year before “The Great Depression” hung over the US like a dark angry cloud. This could be labeled a Streamline Moderne offering in 14 karat white gold filled. The case is in remarkable condition for being almost 100 years young. Elgin “Model 621” men’s Streamline Moderne design wristwatch in 14K white gold fill, circa 1928.
