Antique ImperialJadeite TranslucentGreen IntricateCarvedFlora 1890sScrewEarrings

About the Item

Made during the crossover Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, these antique Chinese earrings feature rare Burmese natural untreated translucent imperial green jadeite, which is intricately hand-carved from bulbous forms into two unique flora designs. The stones are set with four prongs in two different styles on a square gilt brass or mixed-metal frame. When the wire fasteners are screwed on the ears, the kelly-green earrings remain in a diamond position with the white flower-petals located at the bottom tip of only one of them. The reflections and shadows of the polished carvings on the convex stones are enhanced by open backs for maximum illumination. The color is intense on the thickest carvings and equally balanced between blue and yellow like a lush landscape. From the reverse, the saturated green color is evenly distributed, while the white tip is concealed by the frame. Viewed with a loupe, traces of fine brown "fibers" on the concave backs look like the brown skin on weathered green jadeite boulders from Burma, which were the type of jade favored by Chinese craftspersons since the mid-1800s. This is the more valuable condition of Burmese grade-A jadeite. As evidence of the century-plus age of the pair, specks of verdigris are visible on inspection of the findings. With professional cleaning of the carvings, the dark specks of organic material will disappear. The earrings date as early as the 1890s when screw-back twist fasteners emerged and single-gem "button" earrings were fashionable. We included photos taken in natural or artificial light so that the color can be most accurately perceived in different conditions. When viewing the carvings held up towards sunlight the deepest parts are most luminous so that some of the flora is edged in semi-transparent mint green. Marvelous miniature artistry!

  • Antique ArtDeco French ArtPlasticSet BlackSphereMotif CrystalEarrings CoilBangle
    Located in Chicago, IL
In the Art-Deco period when geometric, monotone and sparkly designs became fashionable, leading Paris-based couture designer Elsa Schiaparellli set trends with her artistic use of new plastic resins in bold costume jewelry. This progressive French style is exemplified by this unsigned antique black sphere-motif pair of a coiled bangle bracelet and two-tier crystal earrings. The heat-set curvilinear plastic, along with the silver screw-hardware of the earrings, date the set to no earlier than the 1920s and no later than 1930s. Each inch-diameter earring features 18 black molded bezels containing brilliant rose-cut crystals, while their filigree-like concealed black frames are riveted in back where they twist-fasten with very thin silver hardware. The rhinestones rise above the bezels to maximize their sparkle in rainbow colors, which is accentuated by the stacked frames...

    By Henry Schreiner
    Located in Chicago, IL
In 1956 when Christian Dior's ultra-feminine New Look had dominated fashion for nearly a decade, Schreiner New York handcrafted these opulent unsigned earrings with 22 prong-set open-back crystals to accompany the evening-wear of an American high-end fashion designer. They may have been for client Pauline Trigere when her ready-to-wear collections with accessories including unmarked-Schreiner jewelry were sold by NYC's Bergdorf Goodman and worn by her clients including Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor. Comparatively, Schreiner jewelry produced in the 1950s for direct sale to high-end department stores, such as Neiman Marcus, Henri Bendel and Saks Fifth Avenue, were the only pieces to include a brand signature. Using the best quality European crystals that were custom-made for him, the founder Henry Schreiner was among the world's leading glass-jewelry designers before he died in 1954, whereafter his daughter and her husband continued with their handcrafted production. The family shared this distinction with Western Germany-based Max Muller and Paris-based Roger Jean Pierre, who were commissioned to create haute-couture pieces for the world's leading fashion houses. Notably in 1949, Henry Schreiner was commissioned by Dior to create several exclusive pieces. We know these earrings were not created earlier than 1956 because of the use of iridescent coating on some of the crystals that produces a rainbow effect. Known as aurora-borealis (AB) stones, Swarovski initially produced them exclusively for a haute-couture collection that year by Dior. Shortly thereafter, the Schreiner team had access to such colorful stones, and most certainly used them as soon as possible to enable their American fashion-designer clients to compete with the new Dior iridescent-colors trend. As Schreiner introduced its "ruffle" settings in 1957, we can see that they evolved from a smaller ruffle the year prior that is present on the tips of the marquise-shaped pale yellow stones...
