Description: Magnificent still life with musical instruments dating from the late 17th century. With the pictorial genre of still life, beginning in the late 1500s, inanimate objects became the absolute protagonists of the painted scene.
In this painting, the artist depicts several musical instruments, some sheet music and books, a bouquet of flowers, and on the right a crown juxtaposed with a papal triregnum.
The work is highly illusionistic in every detail, the musical instruments alluding to the temporary pleasantness of music, a metaphor for the transience of life and time passing inexorably.
Although the scholar is unable to formulate an attributive hypothesis, complicit in the vast cauldron of Bergamasque production on the genre, he places photographs of the work in a folder devoted to the followers of Bartolomeo Bettera, an artist who was himself an imitator of the better-known and more gifted Evaristo Baschenis.
