Antique Arts and Crafts Window Sashes with 19th Century Botanicals
About the Item
Marvelous old antique top window sashes, salvaged from an arts and crafts home, built in the early 1920's. They retain the original wavy glass. Mounted within are six 19th century custom matted botanical engravings "Sowerby's English Botany, or, Coloured Figures of British Plants". Sowerby was a famous English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist. Original engravings from the 1866 edition. Plates included: Field Cow-Wheat, Yellow Toadflax, Yellow and Striped Toadflax hybrid, Red Bartsia, Peach-leaved Bell-Flower, Nettle-leaved Bell-Flower.

James Sowerby
James Sowerby (21 March 1757-25 October 1822) was an English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist. Contributions to published works, such as A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland or English Botany, include his detailed and appealing plates. The use of vivid color and accessible texts were intended to reach a widening audience in works of natural history. The standard author abbreviation Sowerby is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.
