Swedish Solid Teak Flip-Top Tables in the Manner of Jens Quistgaard

About the Item

The internet is a miraculous thing, but one aspect of it is that incorrect information has a habit of taking root and refusing to go away. Such is the case for the Jens Quistgaard attribution often given these teak tables with reversible tops. We love this design. We have a couple in our personal collection, and we would love to discover who actually designed them. Despite the fact that Quistgaard was a Dane and these tables all originate from Sweden, Jens Quistgaard has long been given credit for the design. We have searched high and low, but have found no evidence to support that attribution. We have seen them marked DUX, Kallemo, and “Made in Sweden”, but have found no connection between them and Quistgaard or Dansk. Regardless of attribution these tables are wonderful! It’s easy to see how people would connect Quistgaard to a sublime design like this with it’s solid staved teak top that is reversible– offering both a flat surface or one that is concave, functioning as a table, a catch-it-all or fruit bowl, with a sculpted top that beautifully displays the variety of colors and grain of the laminated teak. The cruciform base is comprised of two intersecting supports connected by a lap joint secured by a brass mending plate and held aloft by legs with a reverse taper. This pair is marked on the base "Made in Sweden". We hope to one day discover who is actually responsible for this design we are so fond of, until then we can only describe it as in the manner or style of Jens Quistgaard, but that will not inhibit our enjoyment or appreciation of the wonderful form.
