DAR Eiffel Base Lounge Chair by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller, USA, 2000

About the Item

Introducing a second generation DAR "Eiffel" armchair designed in 1949 by the iconic design duo Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller. In 2001, continuing the Eames’ design ethos of continual, iterative advancements, Herman Miller reintroduced the original Eames Molded Shell Chair in a durable, 100 percent recyclable polypropylene which also included several bold new colors such as this playful "Red-Orange" scheme. Charles (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988) were American designers renowned for their groundbreaking contributions to architecture, furniture and industrial design and manufacturing. They are best remembered for their Mid-Century Modern furniture, built from innovative materials, including molded plywood, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, and aluminum, which offered consumers beautiful, functional, and inexpensive products. Herman Miller was founded in 1905 as the Star Furniture Co. Initially the company produced furniture, especially bedroom suites, in historic revival styles. The company reformed as Herman Miller, Inc. in 1960 and was then led by architect George Nelson, who joined the firm as director of design in 1945. Over the next four decades, Nelson influenced Herman Miller through both his personal designs and the designers that he recruited, including Isamu Noguchi and Charles and Ray Eames. This iconic, instantly recognizable DAR armchair is perfect for collectors and designers alike searching for an authentic early 2nd generation "Eiffel" chair. The shell is in 100% original, vintage condition whist the base has been powder-coated in a flat black tone perfectly off-setting the playful Red/Orange color of the seat. Make it yours today and elevate your space's aesthetic to new, colorful heights. ---Dimensions--- Width: 24 in / 60.96 cm Depth: 24 in / 60.96 cm Height: 31 in / 78.74 cm Seat Height: 17.5 in / 44.45 cm Arm Height: 26 in / 66.04 cm This iconic DAR "Eiffel" armchair has recently undergone a partial restoration. The molded plastic shell is in 100% original, vintage condition and shows only minor signs of vintage wear such as light scratches as well as areas of light discoloration (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided). With that said there are no cracks or other damage present whatsoever. The "red/orange" color of the shell, unique to the Herman Miller Company, is a bit nuanced as it's not quite red and it's not quite orange but a combination of the two. Please view the natural light videos provided to get an understanding of the true color of this chair as well as the subtle discoloration that is present but very difficult to discern from photos alone. The iconic "Eiffel" base has been sand-blasted and powder-coated in a flat back tone that perfectly offsets the playful red/orange color of the seat shell and shows no damage or wear whatsoever. This instantly recognizable DAR chair is incredibly comfortable, structurally sound and ready for a lifetime more of use. Please view all photos and videos for details on this chair's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.

  • 1 Herman Miller Eames Fiberglass Shell DAR Eiffel Base
    By Charles and Ray Eames
    Located in Pasadena, TX
Charles Eames and Ray Eames were the embodiment of the inventiveness, energy and optimism at the heart of Mid-Century Modern American design, and have been recognized as the most influential designers of the 20th century. The Eames' eagerly embraced new technology and materials, and one of their peculiar talents was to imbue their supremely modern design with references to folk traditions. Their Wire chair group of the 1950s, for example, was inspired by basket weaving techniques. The populist notion of “Good Design for all” drove their molded fiberglass chair series that same decade, and also produced the organic-form, ever-delightful La Chaise. In 1956 the Eames lounge chair and ottoman appeared — the supremely comfortable plywood-base-and-leather-upholstery creation that will likely live in homes as long as there are people with good taste and sense. 1 midcentury Herman Miller Eames Fiberglass Shell...
