Large Mexican Folk Art Pottery Sculpture of a Female Depicting Life & Death
About the Item
This large and striking Folk Art pottery sculpture is unsigned, but believed to have been done in Mexico or South America in a contemporary Folk Art style. The sculpture is a study of a young woman of color wearing a brightly printed dress and accessorized with large deep red rose earrings and a beaded necklace with a large heart pendant. The woman's head is divided down the middle portraying her with flesh on the one side, and juxtaposed with her skull in death on the other side. The sculpture is done in a dark brown clay that appears to have been wood fired, and very vibrant colors with a matte finish. This sculpture may be paying homage to the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and mimics her 'Day of the Dead' style, possibly representing her before and after her bus accident. The sculpture is done in main pieces, as the head sits on the post of the neck, and has a cloth pad inside to keep it from moving. The brightly colored necklace is not attached to the body of the sculpture, and the figural rose earrings dangle from wire.
