Pair of Art Deco Hand-Painted Ceramic Vases with Orientalist Motifs by Bretby
About the Item
This sophisticated pair of hand-painted ceramic vases were realized by the esteemed British early 20th century pottery studio, Bretby. Hand-painted in dark chocolate and cream tones, they feature whimsical interpretations of orientalist motifs- including bamboo trees and kabuki masks- reflecting the influence of eastern aesthetics on modern art and design. There are also rabbits dressed as monks, a black cat and a peacock, imbuing the piece with a sense of levity. All of the renderings are presented in relief, imbuing the pieces with a sculptural sense of dimensionality. With their muted, organic palette, curvilinear form, and idiosyncratic design, these pieces are as versatile as they are aesthetically compelling, blending perfectly with any style of interior from Classic Deco to contemporary. Signed on the bottom "Bretby England." Excellent condition,
