Chinoiserie Ochre Yellow Dragon Vase by Lambeth Doulton Faience, England 1880s

About the Item

Elegantly adorned with intricate chinoiserie dragon detailing, this ceramic ochre yellow vase from Lambeth Doulton Faience exudes timeless charm and exquisite craftsmanship. Two meticulously painted dragons grace the surface, each scale meticulously marked out, with vivid blue claws and golden flames emanating from their mouths. The body scales feature meticulous application, with individual white scales tracing the belly edge and a delicate barbed red crest along the back. The vase's mouth is uniquely indented on three sides, revealing glimpses of its turquoise glazed interior, a stunning contrast to the ochre yellow exterior. Crafted from faience and decorated with enamel glazes that retain their brightness, this vase showcases exceptional artistry and attention to detail. While a small chip on the underside of the mouth rim is present, it remains unseen when the vase is displayed upright. Detailed markings underneath include a deep stamp indicating Lambeth Doulton Faience, dating the piece to the period 1872-1891, along with the series number 2495 and a possible crown symbol. Additionally, a red stamp bears the letter "S" and the numbers "178" or "198". About Doulton Ceramics: Founded in 1815 by John Doulton in Lambeth, London, the company initially produced drain pipes, pottery, and storage jars. The addition of John's son Henry to the business in 1835 marked the beginning of unprecedented success. Notably, in 1861, Queen Victoria commissioned Doulton to create a set of water filters for all her castles and palaces, following the passing of Prince Albert. Doulton's introduction of Faience in 1872, a finer-bodied ceramic painted with intricate designs, further expanded the company's offerings. Throughout the late 19th century, Doulton made significant contributions to London's architectural landscape, providing tiles and decorations for landmark buildings such as Harrods and the Savoy. In 1901, Doulton received a Royal Warrant, leading to the establishment of Royal Doulton. Today, the brand continues its legacy, boasting successful collaborations with celebrities such as Gordon Ramsay and Ellen DeGeneres.
