Attr To Namikawa Rare Pair Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Butterfly Vases
About the Item
Attributed to Namikawa Yasuyuki, 1845 to 1927, a pair of rare identical antique Japanese, late Meiji era, enamel vases. Each vase has a globular shaped body and a long fluted neck. The bodies of the vases are adorned with polychrome images of butterflies surrounded by floral, and foliage motifs made in the Cloisonne technique. The necks feature floral, foliage, and geometrical patterns made in the same technique. The bases are decorated with floral and foliage ornaments made in the same technique. The ground of each vase is inlaid with a Goldstone.
Unmarked. For a similar example attributed to Namikawa Yasuyuki see Los Angeles County Museum of Art - Polished to Perfection: Japanese Cloisonné from the Collection of Donald K. Gerber and Sueann E. Sherry. Pages 89 , 99.
Namikawa Yasuyuki was among the most celebrated Japanese enamelers of the Meiji period, together with Namikawa Sosuke they became the most famous cloisonne artists of the 1890 to 1910 period, a time known as the Golden Age of Japanese enamels. Circa: 19th century.
