Oldnordic urn / evaporator of terracotta lacquered with an antique bronze

About the Item

This impressive ‘Oldnordic’ urn / evaporator of terracotta by Michael Andersen (1859-1931) was executed around 1900 in Rønne, Bornholm. The urn / evaporator is lacquered with an antique bronze This example of a water cooler was designed to be placed on top of a tile stove, where the water would evaporate and compensate for the otherwise dry climate in a tile stove-heated room. These imaginative creations, paraphrasing ancient urns and jars, were modern around the time of the First World War. They were produced at all the pottery factories on Bornholm. Cast in local yellow clay, fired like terracotta, and subsequently cold-painted, meaning coated with a bronze-like patina. This was somewhat of a counterpoint to the many copies of Greek and Roman antiquities that had been fashionable from around 1860 to the First World War. Dragons, runes, shields, and ancient ornamentation are richly represented on the urn. The runes to the left of each dragon: ‘reknar lutbruk’ and to the right of each dragon: ‘tura burkarhiurd’. These are the names of the legendary Nordic hero Regnar Lodbrog and his wife Tora Borgarhjort. The photo with the various urns / evaporators is from a catalogue dated 1910.
