Bronze 'Child Motorist' mascot bookends by Jean Verschneider, 1910
About the Item
Jean Verschneider (French, 1872-1943)
Of motoring interest, a pair of charming patinated bronze radiator mascots, known as ‘Le Chauffeur Râleur’ and ‘Le Chauffeur son Avertisseur’ respectively. The bronzes depicting two children, each wearing a fur coat, cap and driving goggles, with one embracing an oversized bulb horn.
The bronzes were both mounted (in period) for use as bookends with period marble bases and upstands, and each bronze is stamped with the foundry mark for AG Paris, and bears the sculptors signature in the cast. The bases of the bookends have the original baize.
Jean Verschneider was an extremely versatile French artist and sculptor who also created a number of statues for Goldscheider, but was probably best known for ‘The Kid’ a 1925 car mascot depicting Jackie Coogan in the title role in the 1921 Charlie Chaplin film of the same name.
