Rare Haig & Chippendale Geo. III 8-day, Hour Strike Longcase Grandfather Clock
About the Item
This could possibly be one of the most rare and fine longcase grandfathers clock to have ever graced our 98 year old business. Signed on top of the hood/bonnet by Haig & Chippendale, referring to the financial partner to Thomas Chippendale Jr., the son of the infamous Thomas Chippendale, Sr. viewed as the finest cabinetmaker from the Golden Age of furniture cabinet-making of the mid to late 18th century. Also noted in the "signed" bonnet/hood is the address of their famous shop in St. Martin's Lane (Covent Garden). His son, Thomas Jr., apprenticed with his father from an early age and upon the father's death in 1779, took over the firm with their financial partner, Thomas Haig. The firm then became known as Haig & Chippendale until the death of Thomas Haig in 1804. Though significantly harmed by the loss of his financial partner, Thomas Chippendale Jr. survived this setback, and he continued as an "upholsterer and cabinet-maker to the Duke of Gloucester" and continued other high end commissions until 1820. After his father's death, Thomas the younger continued to supply a high standard of quality, design and workmanship.
The mahogany case of this magnificent clock has many of the learned characteristics of his father's work such as the exceptional fretwork noted in the center of the long waist door and along the canted corners as well as the detailed, precise carving noted along the base of the hood/bonnet. Also please note the handsome and highly detailed and hand-carved and gilt paterae on the swan-neck pediment of the hood.
The cable driven eight-day movement has been cleaned recently and is in good working order and strikes on the hour. The circular chapter ring of the dial is silvered and has Roman numerals inlaid with blackened wax and the circular convex shaped silvered medallion and the top of the clock face reads in Latin " Sic Est Vita Hominis" which translates "Such is Life" or "Thus is Life". There is no maker's name for the clockmaker found on the dial.
There is a notable "shrinkage crack" along the center of the waist door which is understandable due to the age of the clock and does not affect it value. It is only mentioned for accuracy. Otherwise, the case appears to have had little or no restoration and is in a original, very good condition. Some fading along the lower shaped raised panel of the base is noted but has a marvelous highly figured flame mahogany and pleasing patina. A hole where a former finial exists but the finial does not.
The black wax within the numerals is beginning to show signs of age but we have left it in the condition in which it was acquired.
There is no key for the lock to the waist door but there is a winding key that accompanies the clock.
After extensive research, we would like to say we know of its provenance, but the individual from whom it was purchased inherited it and was not even aware of the Haig & Chippendale "signature" boldly impressed (though crudely) on top of the bonnet. We have contacted several societies and great manor houses of the UK to find its possible former home, but to date have not. We are certain though that there would be no reason for the "signature" to be spurious as where it is located would rarely (if ever) be seen.
Case is only 11" deep at the very bottom from the scroll of the ogee feet, otherwise it is 10" deep.
