Nils Thorsson Royal Copenhagen Mid-Century Celadon Bowl

About the Item

Nils Thorsson (Danish, 1898-1975) was a renowned Danish ceramicist and was the leading ceramicist at Royal Copenhagen/Aluminia for around 60 years. Born in Sweden he moved to study in Denmark in 1917. He began work at the Aluminia factory as an apprentice and became its artistic director in the 1920s. He held that position until the late 1960s and was a leading figure in Danish ceramic design, especially for his innovative glazes. He is best known among collectors for his experimentation with glazes. The best of these stoneware pots is among some of the finest Danish ceramics one can find. A stunning hand-crafted Royal Copenhagen Danish mid-century celadon glazed ceramic bowl of square form and decorated with a central fish by Nils Thorsson. The bowl stands on a round unglazed foot with recessed glazed base and is of thick even construction and of square shape with rounded corners and a flat cut raised top edge. The bowl is decorated in rich green celadon glazes with a ghost like image of a fish in the base of the bowl. Probably inspired by earlier Asian ceramics the bowl has printed Royal Copenhagen marks to the base along with an incised artist mark for Nils Thorsson and originating from the 1950’s. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. See Scandinavian Art Pottery Demark and Sweden by Robin Hecht Minardi page 27 for an example of this bowl. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
