Tang Style Sencai Glazed Funerary or Tomb Pottery, Hunter on Horse with Dog
About the Item
This rare sencai glazed man on a horse is a stunning example of funerary pottery figures used as spirit objects or Mingqi in Chinese burial tombs for millennia. This Tang style horse, rider, and dog appear to be a hunting trio--possibly representing the provision of ample game and sustenance for the deceased in the afterlife. The facial expressions of the hunter and dog and the musculature and details of the horse are realistic, demonstrating a fineness of craftsmanship.
The head and hands of the rider remain unglazed and are painted, while the tricolour or sencai glazing of ochre, green, and cream/white provide accents and dimension to the rest of the figure. The Tang horse and dog are predominantly ochre with darker accents, while the hunter's clothing is glazed in green. The hunter's hair and hat are painted black, and although the black paint has faded, the sencai glazed colours remain vibrant and true.
There are cracks or seams in the clay around the hunter's right upper arm and evidence of one on each of the dog's front legs that look to have happened before glazing. The right foot was reglued recently but there doesn't appear to be any other damage on close inspection. Dirt remains in crevices.
Uncertain of age. TL testing not done. Stamped on the underside of the base.

- Chinese Pottery Ceramic Glazed Mud Figure of Court Lady Tang Dynasty with StandLocated in Studio City, CASimply gorgeous and so delicately and beautifully made. This work has been molded in a whitish, dense terracotta, typical of the region of the capital of Luoyang, and then lightly glazed. We are not sure how to date this work. We believe, based on comparisons, that this piece could date as far back as the Tang dynasty (though we are not experts and have not had this verified by one. Again, this is not our area of expertise). The white terracotta and glaze appear correct as does the figures stately pose and elaborate hairstyle which was a characteristic feature of Tang pottery women. The people of ancient China believed that some part of the essence and life force of a human being was contained in the hair. Much time and effort went into this to create elaborate coiffures that the woman proudly displayed when in public.
