Indian Asian Antique Brass Alms Dish with Hamsa Bird Design
About the Item
A fine antique Asian Indian brass alms dish molded with a hamsa bird design and dating from the 19th century.
The hamsa is believed to be based on an aquatic migratory bird and is believed to be a goose. It is used in Indian culture as a spiritual symbol.
The lightly made dish is of round form with a raised edge and small folded back rim. The edge has a molded vertical ribbing pattern with a simple incised patterning to the rim. The centre of the dish is slightly raised and relief molded with a figure of the hamsa bird in side profile with its raised tail feathers. The bird is finely detailed with good features and set against a finely stippled ground and set within a decorative border with a further floral border running around the outer edge of the inner dish. The alms dish is not marked with a polished finish to the inside and with its original uncleaned patina to the base.
