Large Contemporary Japanese Red Black Silk Folding Screen
About the Item
Japanese contemporary two panel "byobu" or folding screen featuring genryoku style handcrafted raised pure silk kimono in black, red and gold on textured black background. On the left are the cutout and appliqued (kiritsuke) characters for "chitose." On the right, the characters for "wakatake" (young bamboo) are represented in a kanoko (tie-dye) form. Both the tagasode kimonos have the motif of a bamboo fence, and the background is tied in different colors. It is a juxtaposition of two similar designs that has been complemented by the use of variations and colors in its execution.
Tagasode is the way a genryoku kosode kimono is hung over a kimono rack. The kosode is considered the origin of modern kimono. The Genryoku style of kosode that became popular at the end of Meiji era is also referred to as Genroku kosode. It emulated Genroku type designs in its use of surihaku (a dying technique involving foil applique). Designs with an impressive robustness were appreciated in this kosode and tie-dying and embroidery were techniques often used. According to the designer of this series, tagasode originated from the desire of ladies of the court to preserve their exquisite kimonos, and thus kimono designs showcasing the four seasons in Japan, its history and its customs have been passed down all the way to the present generation.
This byobu series conveys the beauty and sensibility that the history of Japan reflects and at the same time enhances contemporary living spaces.
