VivienneWestwood 1998 MarilynMonroe CorsetDress Velvet Moire Red Evening Gown

About the Item

British Vivienne Westwood (1941-2022) designed this corset-style hourglass red velvet evening dress with its outsized bow and sheer moire faux-underlay while producing her "Dressed To Scale Collection" in 1998 with protege Andreas Kronthaler. This fresh interpretation of the classic Marilyn-Monroe silhouette was dubbed the "MM Corset Dress" for her semi-couture Gold Label, while it can still be made-to-measure as a bespoke dress (see photo of model wearing version as a white wedding gown). Marking a turning-point in Vivienne Westwood's career, this ready-to-wear red dress was notably purchased at her Conduit Street boutique in London during the upscale Mayfair shop's inaugural year, when it was among the first garments tagged with the new Red Label, which was made in Italy. Referencing Westwood's punk-rock fashion roots, the neckline and sleeve hems are hand cut. At her fashion shows, Westwood sometimes hand-cut colored hosiery for her models, which suggests that she or Andreas did so for this particular dress that could have debuted on the runway or at the opening party for the store. Exemplifying Vivienne Westwood's sexy yet playful reinterpretation of historical fashion, the dress boldly exaggerates the decolletage with her sculptural double bow, which tops the corset-like low wide neckline. Its weight and the angled shoulder-straps (width 15.5") are cleverly supported by a mock underlay of moire that ends at the elbows. Above the invisible zip at the back center, the moire is stretched into a keyhole shape when fastened by hook and eye at the neck. The curves and volume of the bow are echoed on the tight dress by the flounce hem that creates soft pleats below the bodice. In very good condition, the cotton-blend velvet and stretch moire mid-length cocktail dress is tagged Italian-size 40, but it runs a size or more larger like a US 6. The ongoing outpouring of international social media and journalist news about Vivienne Westwood since her death at a youthful 81 years old demonstrates the profound effect of her five decades of shaping fashion, rock-music style, and meaningful activism arguably more than any other designer. TheMet Costume Institute curators, who have included scores of her designs in their exhibitions, consider her the most influential British fashion designer of the 20th Century. More so, solo exhibitions of her work continue to be mounted by museums far and wide since significant shows by London's Victoria & Albert Museum in 2004 and NYC's The Museum At FIT in 2011.

  • MartinMargiela 1990 1stRetrospectiveCollection1994 Sheer Black Convertible Apron
    By Maison Martin Margiela
    Located in Chicago, IL
Dating this minimalist convertible transparent black chiffon rectangular garment by Belgian former fashion designer Martin Margiela to Spring 1994 among his many variations of the traditional waiter-style apron that he reworked with his eponymous Maison Martin Margiela since its first collection for Spring/Summer 1989, the iconic corner-stitched textural white-cotton brand label is stenciled with seemingly contradictory text referencing an earlier collection in Fall 1990. Instead of the blank label that had become internationally recognized among the fashion elite within the brand's initial five years--before the presence of any other tag printed with the designer name--this black print was added in this manner for only one collection during its founder's tenure. The distinct typography specified the collection season when the new Margiela design had debuted since he selected favorites to re-edition from his first 10 fashion shows. This season-less self-curated retrospective collection without any new designs was unprecedented in the ready-to-wear fashion industry, which sold only new clothes typically two to five times annually. In the early 1990s, this old-made-new-again collection was astonishing for a Paris-based high-end brand, for which any lack of fresh designs for Spring had otherwise been attributed to the loss of an artistic director or the outbreak of war. Nevertheless, there are subtle differences of color, material and draping possibilities that make our re-edition unique from the 1990 apron and from later "replicas", which was the term that Margiela printed on a different kind of label for his second self-curated retrospective in Spring 1999 following 10 more collections. Aside from the text-printed brand label with four characteristic hand-sewn corner stitches, the only other element that unified Margiela's first collection of favorites was that all the items were overdyed a darker color so that the clothes were various shades of grey, blue or black depending on the original color of the textile and how much dye the thread/yarn absorbed. The first Margiela apron...
