Archival 1973 Givenchy Haute Couture Orange Dotted Silk Carwash-Hem Caftan Gown

About the Item

A gorgeous, ultra rare Givenchy numbered haute couture vibrant orange polka-dot silk gown ensemble dating back to his 1973 spring-summer collection. This rare four-piece ensemble was made for Mona von Bismarck (1897-1983), international socialite and fashion icon. In 1933, she was the first American voted the Best-Dressed Woman in the World by Chanel, Lanvin, Molyneux, Lelong, and Balenciaga. Bismarck maintained a circle of influential friends and surrounded herself with remarkable couture until her death, when she was buried in Givenchy. Givenchy's trademark of sculpted lines and luxurious fabrics make his work easily recognizable. This gorgeous orange polka-dot semi sheer look is a beautiful example of his brilliance. The fabric itself is a masterpiece; the highest quality bright melon orange semi-sheer silk with a stunning satin weave large scale polka dot pattern. I adore the elegant lean, long sleeved bodice with optional caftan overlay. The flirty carwash hemline, which is also repeated on the caftan, has such beautiful movement when you walk. I especially love the scarf which looks fantastic around the neck or hair. As shown, the whole look can be styled a number of ways depending on your mood! The dress is as wearable now as when it was first created and feels so incredibily modern! The entire ensemble is finished by hand and is from the time when the house was run by Hubert de Givenchy himself. The pictures say it all.
