About the Item

In William Hung’s dramatic contemporary bronze sculpture called "The Messenger" a male figure dancer is elegantly balanced on a gently curved arc, one arm extended overhead and the other outstretched holding a small bird. The work is intended to speak to humankind's relationship to nature — one based on balance and harmony. The arc suggests the curvature of the planet Earth, and together with the bird, represents nature. Hung’s figurative work is a compelling mix of both traditional and modern forms that expresses what it is to be human. The physicality of his work is often influenced by a personal interest in the art of dance. This work will take 8-12 weeks to cast. Purchaser can choose the colour of the patina finish. The work is sold without a base, but one can be ordered. “..Dance has deepened my understanding of the human body, especially of the human body in motion, and its relationship to space. This understanding in turn informs my sculptural works in a very profound way; many of my works capture the human figure in motion, with poses and gestures that express a wide range of human emotions.” WW Hung Hung studied architecture at the University of Waterloo where he earned a Bachelor of Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1997. After graduation, Hung relocated to New York City and practiced architecture there and in Toronto for several years. In 2004, he became a member of the American Institute of Architects. He also began creating sculptural works in a unique combination of the figurative and the abstract. In 2015, Hung joined the Sculptors Society of Canada. Hung’s work is held in private collections in Canada, France and the US.

    The elegant form of a nude female figure is captured in this sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak. This table-top piece is named after ‘Taygete’ one of the Pleiades--seven sister nature deities (nymphs) found in Greek mythology. She stands, head bowed, arms clasped around her neck as if in deep thought. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and rich earthy patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture.
