About the Item

Masque de Napoléon sur un Rhinocéros, Sculpture, Dali, Gold, Animals, Bronze Masque mortuaire de Napoléon sur un rhinoceros Ed. 7/8 pcs Bronze with golden patina 32.5 x 30 x 18.5 cm Signed, numbered and foundry's stamp : 7/8 , Valsuani Dalì, Sculpture & Objets, Le dur et le mou, by Robert and Nicolas Descharnes, Eccart, 2004, similar cast illustrated under no.359-361, p.140. Fascinated since his childhood by Vermeer’s painting “The Lacemaker”, Dalí adopted it as one of a protagonist for its documentary “The Prodigious History of the Lacemaker and the Rhinoceros”. The documentary was filmed in a rhinoceros enclosure at the Zoo in Vincennes, it was at that specific moment that Dalí developed the idea of “Masque Mortuaire de Napoléon”. With his insatiable quest to associate different concepts and images with each other, the artist started to create an analogy between the rhinoceros and Napoleon. The mask of Napoleon is, here, reworked with horns coming out from the subject’s forehead, eyelids, and chin and placed on the rhinoceros’ back like a shell. Throughout his life, as the animal, Napoléon did not stop to forge ahead. The rhinoceros acts as a support and perpetuate the Emperor’s pride character. The creation testimonies the artist’s desire to weave beyond reality, with the help of his literary imagination, the choice of his subjects, his incredible creativity, and his Art itself.
