Pablo Picasso
One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.
“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.
Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

A sweeping light blue back and a peach colored belly make up the body of the fish. Light blue fins crown the back of the fish and a delicate tail parts off the back. Dashes of yellow encircle the rim of the creamy colored bowl, brightening the entire work and creating a dreamy abstracted pattern around the fish. The colors emit a tropical sensation, reminding the viewer of the warmth of the sun and the salty taste of the ocean air. Picasso, who often riffs on ancient Greek...Category

Each aspect of the man’s face, from his furrowed brow to his side gaze is carefully illustrated. The crowding of horizontal lines on his brow and vertical lines on his nose bring a sense of tension to his face, which compounds the furrowed brow. There are only two colors on the plaque, black and red, but the semi circle of hair atop the mans head...Category

Title : Preservation Jar 1 Materials : Stoneware, Underglaze, Glaze Date : 2020 Dimensions : 12" x 5.5" 5.5" Description : Ceramic jar with hand-painted vintage textile print Rachel Hubbard Kline's work explores the wistfulness of personal connections to historical domestic objects and material culture. Kline seeks symbiosis in the relationship of surfaces to forms and addresses the hierarchy of importance between the form itself and the image or decoration. Objects both functional and decorative, factor into the banality and routineness of daily life. As the current political and social climate continues to shift, She seeks to compare past and present means of the production of goods and labor. Surface design inspired by vintage textile prints from family quilts and other historical motifs appear in Kline's work. The vessel acts as a stand in for the body and a metaphor for preservation. Kline's series of jars and jugs are intended to preserve memories of family members and places by using specific colors, patterns and objects she remembers from childhood to the present. Rachel Hubbard Kline is an art educator and artist in her hometown Kansas City, MO. With a background in fashion and art history, she explores relationships of fine art and craft in the disciplines of drawing, painting, ceramics, and fiber. Hubbard draws on her Midwestern roots and ties to rural farm life to reflect on past ways of life based on collections and artifacts. Hubbard Kline has been the recipient of educator residencies at the Kansas City Art Institute, a participant in the Connecting Collections teacher institute in New York, and Educator Conferences and AP Teacher Training at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Park University in 2010, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Connecticut in 2007, and attended Parsons School of Design.
