Nison Tregor
Bronze Bust of a Gentleman by Nison Tregor

1940

About the Item

Nison Tregor Born in Lithuania of Polish parents, Nison Tregor studied sculpture at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. After immigrating to the United States he worked in the New York studio of Malvina Hoffman, who had studied with Auguste Rodin. He created busts of several eminent Americans including Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as several foreign heads of state and other celebrities. He spent the final years of his life working in Europe. This bronze likeness of Ignacy Jan Paderewski is the last portrait posed for by the renowned Polish pianist, composer and statesman. The artist completed the work using the clay bust he had been working on at the time of Paderewski’s final illness and subsequent death. This particular bronze sculpture has a beautiful patina and the sitter has a refined and elegant posture that is beautifully captured in bronze.
