Copper Tritscheller
Glass Bat on Branch with Glass Moon in Circle

About the Item

Bronze, Cast lead glass bat and moon Bats are a matter of perception. This work captures bats in bronze and glass, two extraordinary elements that when fused, create a tension between light and a weighted dark. Bats, most often perceived as creatures of the night, come to life with refractive light and color in these pieces. Glass is a thoughtful material – technically challenging and delicate – which draws attention to not just the beauty of bats but also their endangered status. Copper was first inspired to sculpt bats when she was visiting a temple in Chachongsao, Thailand, where she encountered hundreds of thousands of bats hanging above her, wings gently quivering. Copper remembers that she had never thought about bats before, but at that moment she was captivated and started to research them. The more she learned, the deeper her respect for these marvelous creatures, and the more she wanted to find a way to help people understand and appreciate them. In her bat sculptures, Copper enjoys taking liberties with their features and morphing them with humans, blurring the lines between bats and people.

In addition to Palumbo’s renowned collection of animals, Palumbo pushes the boundaries of the human experience even further with his exploration of shapes and objects. From small people...
