Discus Thrower's Torso

2016

About the Item

This artwork emulates the classical statues from the ancient world, particularly with the head broken off at the base of the neck if carved in marble. In fact I went to the lengths of making a silicone rubber mould of broken Carrara marble then casting that and incorporating it into the sculpture only to be remoulded in its entirety to be cast in bronze. The reason for doing this is to show the chrystalline texture that could only come from marble yet exhibited here in bronze. there is a renaissance feature here of contrapposto a twisting of the torso that lends itself well to that of a discus thrower in action.

  • Nautilus

The Nautilus shell is an excellent example of mathematics inherent within lifeforms of the natural world. As Davies consistently uses the 'golden ratio' (1:1.618) to proportion his work, he thought it important to exemplify this in his subject matter. The Fibonacci sequence (where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers) and the logarithmic spiral are also inherent here. The bronze shell is mounted on a black granite base in a way that creates an optical illusion suggesting it is levitating above the base. This bronze Nautilus...
