Anne and Patrick Poirier
Mane (Lion) - Wooden Sculpture by Anne and Patrick Poirier - 1968

1968

About the Item

Lion is a wonderful contemporary wooden sculpture realized in 1968 by Anne and Patrick Poirier. Signed on the back. Includes authenticity certificate. The passage of time, the traces and scars of its passage, the fragility of human constructions and the power of the ruins, ancient as contemporary, are the source from which their creativity draws. This contemporary sculpture is a perfect example of their art.  Anne Poirier was born in Houllevigue, Marseille, in 1942; Patrick Poirier was born in Nantes in 1942. The two French brothers and artists, through their contemporary artworks and installations, deal with issues related to architecture, archeology, and mythology, reflecting on the themes of time, memory, and space. Both studied at the École Superieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and then won the Prix de Rome, which allowed them to stay for three years in the Italian capital at the French Academy of Villa Medici. Their artistic research, heterogeneous in techniques and materials, from drawing to photography, from the cast to the collection of objects, from sculpture to video, aims at pondering on the theme of time and on its effects on memory. The two artists have found fragments of ruins at some archaeological sites, both real and imaginary, and reproduced them with Japanese paper casts, photographs, archival research, giving life to a sort of parallel archeology. These works refer to the archaeological sites of Villa Medici (1971), Ostia Antica (1972), the Domus Aurea (1975-77), as well as to the fantastic cities inspired by Borges or mythological stories. They also created monumental works in marble and bronze, shattered statues or architectural elements (The death of Efialte, 1982; Giove e Encelado, 1982-83, Antibes, Musée Picasso), large photographs (still lifes of objects, words engraved on petals), complex installations like The shadow of Gradiva. A last excavation campaign through the collections of the Getty Center (Los Angeles, 1999-2000) further underlined the theme of fragility, of the ephemeral, and of violence. Recent works include Danger zone (2001); L'âme du voyageur endormi (2004); The memory factory (2006); The labyrinth of memory (2007), a mirror installation designed for the Filosofia festival and the atrium at the Palazzo dei Musei in Modena, Italy.

  • Broken Circle
    By Karine Giboulo
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
The Responsibility of Stories: Karine Giboulo’s Broken Circle Text by Sasha Gora Shoulders shrugged, a man stands among row after row of empty single beds. Like the beds, with frames that tilt and mattresses that hang a bit too far to the right, his posture is wobbly, a little unsure. It is hard to tell if he is looking ahead, or if his gaze is cast down. Part of Karine Giboulo’s Broken Circle, the empty beds are haunting as they reference the history of residential schools. The man’s stare suggests the weight of memory, the burden of stories. Giboulo employs sculpture as a mode of storytelling. The Montreal-based artist creates elaborate miniature worlds that are reminiscent of dioramas and ethnographic museum displays. Behind their precious scale and warm colours are harsh observations and critiques of the world’s economic and social ills. For her exhibition at Art Mûr, Giboulo delicately engages with Canada’s broken relationship with First Nations communities. Past projects have brought Giboulo to China (All you can eat, 2008), Haiti (Democracy Village, 2012), and India (City of Dreams, 2013). Back in Canada, Giboulo realized even though she grew up close to the Manawan community, Lanaudière, she had never set foot on a reserve. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released a summary in 2015 that describes the residential school system as cultural genocide. “Cultural” seems to soften the punch; however, cultural genocide is a component to genocide, not a different type. The commission’s head Justice Murray Sinclair states “ . . . this is not an aboriginal problem, it's a Canadian problem." Broken Circle imparts a similar view. This is an installation about Canada...
