Wayne Fischer
"Flower (Small Bowl), " Doubl Walled Porcelain Vessel by Wayne Fischer

1983

About the Item

"Flower" is a double-walled porcelain ceramic bowl by Wayne Fischer. It features delicate pink and white coloration. 4 1/2" x 7" diameter Milwaukee ceramist currently residing in France. University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee 1974-1978 Bachelor of Fine Arts 1978 Carroll College - Waukesha, Wisconsin 1972-1974 In France since 1986, the American artist Wayne Fischer uses the plasticity of porcelain to create profound work which, ranging from containers to sculpture, is an organic ode to the real. You have to touch Wayne Fischer's pieces. Feel the softness of their skin, slide your fingers over their curves, stroke the slight swelling of the veins and folds, before plunging your hand into the hole, without really knowing what's waiting there, lurking in its depths; bottomless space, an unknown being or just the relief of a smooth, silky mold? The sculptures of Wayne Fischer go beyond words. They are an experience to be lived. Their forms undulate in space, animated by their own energy, pieces without any beginning or end of an expanding material that appears liable to retract suddenly and be swallowed up by the void, that black hole which they each have inside them and which silently contemplates the spectator. Like any work that speaks via gut feelings rather than going via the head, Fischer's triggers strong feelings among audiences, who either accept it or reject it, instinctively. Its strength lies in its ability to place us face to face with ourselves. For that, there is no need for speeches, drama or cannons...

    By Harumi Nakashima
    Located in St. Louis, MO
Japanese artist Harumi Nakashima creates free-form ceramic sculptures that feature organic, yet psychedelic characteristics. Nakashima, mostly known for beautifully structured, odd geometric shapes embellished with iconic polka dots, works with a level of intricacy that demonstrates the artist’s attention to detail. The sculptor often evokes the Sodeisha art movement, a 1940s reactionary effort against the dominion of Japan’s popular folk-craft styles (especially the traditional, functional aspects of Japanese pottery) and ceramics created for the purpose of tea ceremonies. Sodeisha, known for its modern take on traditional Japanese aesthetics, was disbanded in 1998. However, artists like Nakashima have thrived tremendously by incorporating Sodeisha references into their current pieces. A contemporary aesthetic and subtle, refined references to traditional Japanese pottery allow the works to be perceived aesthetically rather than functionally. "Internal Shape 09", Abstract...
