Oliver Ashworth-Martin
Achondrite – Eucalyptus & Bronze by Oliver Ashworth-Martin - Sculpture, nature

2019

About the Item

Achondrite – Eucalyptus & Bronze is a unique bronze and wood sculpture by contemporary English sculptor Oliver Ashworth-Martin, dimensions are 19.5 × 19.5 × 19.5 cm (7.7 × 7.7 × 7.7 in). This sculpture is signed by the artist and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Oliver Ashworth-Martin addresses a major theme in his work, the difference between the organic and inorganic, in the "Achondrites" series. Here, the contrast is between metal and carbon. The sculptor works with seedpods from plants (eucalyptus pods, for instance). The seedpods are then covered in metal, which turns them into pure carbon. The solid metal matrix that surrounds the plant pods is cut, exposing a striking contrast between the two materials. Oliver Ashworth-Martin often includes natural elements in his drawings and sculptures, taking inspiration from the diversity and vastness of Australian vegetation. Mathematical harmony of patterns and richness of shapes and textures are revealed by him through abstraction, magnification, or contrast with inorganic materials (like metal). His explanations provide viewers with a fresh perspective on their surroundings.
