Roland Topor
PANIQUE Signed Lithograph, Surreal Caricature Portrait, Black Humor

1973

About the Item

PANIQUE is a hand drawn, limited edition lithograph by the French artist Roland Topor printed in Paris France 1973 using hand lithography techniques on archival Arches paper, 100% acid free. PANIQUE presents a surreal, black and white caricature portrait of a grinning man dressed in an imposing bulbous outfit standing dead center while grasping two men by the head, one in each hand; his big buckle shoes are stepping on two more male characters who kneel on the ground on either side of him. These characters make reference to the "Panique group" which Topor had helped create in France 1962. This collective focused on creating absurd and bewildering performances to reject the commercialization of surrealism. This lithograph is a very unique, rare, hand made print which Topor produced in Paris especially for the Panique members. Print size - 26 x 19.75 inches Artist Proof - Pencil signed by Roland Topor, unframed, very good condition, strong hand printed impression Year printed - 1973 Roland Topor (1938 - 1997) born in Paris of Polish immigrant parents, was French illustrator, painter, writer, poet, director, singer, actor and filmmaker. In 1962 he created the Panic Movement "mouvement panique", (with Arrabal, O. Olivier, Jodorowsky, Sternberg), a group that sets his life style on confusion, humor, terror, hazard and euphoria. Topor wrote the novel "The Tenant" (1964), which was filmed by Roman Polanski as The Tenant (1976) (a remake of the film, Le nouveau locataire (2013), was released in 2013). Roland Toper may be best known for his graphic works with their surrealist humor, leaning towards the side of the gruesome mixed with the mundane. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Topor's artworks have appeared in books, newspapers, posters, and film animations. His style in literature, cinema, painting and acting slides toward the surreal macabre and express examples of his taste for black comedy.
