Provenance: obtained from the original art designer from 1986. Exhibitions: Howl Arts New York, NY 2024: Pyramid Pioneers. Literature/References: The New York Times, 9/6/86: See, “ABOUT NEW YORK; In the Face of a Plague, A Party”; article credits Haring & Warhol with the design & illustration of this invitation: “More than 500 of Mr. Burgoyne's friends…came to the party. Andy Warhol, who did two drawings of Mr. Burgoyne for the invitations, was there, as was Keith Haring, who designed the inside of the invitation. Kenny Scharf performed on stage. Madonna, a very close friend of Mr. Burgoyne's, came to the party and spoke with him for a long time.” Toronto Star January 2014: “Madonna collection, under wraps for decades, up for auction” (see photos in article containing the piece as part of Madonna’s private collection). Further Background: Drawn to the excitement of New York, Martin Burgoyne moved to Manhattan to study art at the Pratt Institute in the early 1980s. Upon arriving, Steve Rubell, co-owner of Studio 54. Burgoyne met and befriended up-and-coming singer Madonna and the two became roommates. Burgoyne was one of Madonna's early dancers and also designed the cover sleeve for her 1983 single ‘Burning Up’. Madonna & Burgoyne maintained a close relationship and shared a circle of friends, which included artists Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Burgoyne is said to have invited Warhol to be his date to Madonna's wedding in August 1985. In the summer of 1986, Burgoyne…was diagnosed with AIDS-related complex (ARC). In September 1986, a fundraising party was organized by Deb Parker at the Pyramid Club in the East Village. The event raised $6,000 for Burgoyne's medical and living expenses. Among the guests were Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, who both designed the invitation, Kenny Scharf, who performed at the event, Anita Sarko, Steve Rubell, and Madonna. The New York Times wrote an article covering the event as the AIDS epidemic was devastating a generation of predominantly gay men. Madonna paid for Burgoyne's medical expenses at St. Vincent's Hospital. She also leased an apartment for him on West 12th Street in Greenwich Village, so that he could be closer to the hospital. On November 10, 1986, Madonna modeled a denim jacket painted by Burgoyne at an AIDS benefit fashion show for St. Vincent's Hospital. Burgoyne died at 23 years old of AIDS-related complications on November 30, 1986. Pyramid Club, East Village, NYC: The Pyramid Club was opened circa 1985 by Bobby Bradley and Alan Mace (formerly of Danceteria) as part of a broader East Village reaction against West Village gay culture. Bradley and Mace hired the Mudd Club’s Ivan Baker as their principal DJ. Related Categories Graffiti. Vintage Keith Haring poster. Keith Haring prints. Keith Haring Andy Warhol. Kenny Scharf.
