Quantum Memories: Noise A, B, C, 2020, (Set of 3), by Refik Anadol, Digital Art

2020

About the Item

At the crossroad between aesthetics, data, design, and computing, this hypnotic set of artworks represent visual interpretations of Google Quantum AI's research data exploring the possibility of parallel realities. Refik Anadol Quantum Memories: Noise A, B, C, (Set of 3), 2020 C-print 44 × 44 cm (17.3 × 17.3 in) Signed and comes with a QR code Edition of 413 PLEASE NOTE: Edition numbers could vary from the one shown in the images. The pictures are only for illustrative reasons, the work is offered unframed. In physics, quantum noise refers to the noise of uncertainty arising from random fluctuations in a system. Tapping into these random fluctuations as a unique realm of possibilities and predictions, Refik Anadol’s QUANTUM MEMORIES: NOISE series uses Google Quantum AI’s most cutting-edge, publicly available quantum computation research data and algorithms to explore the possibility of a parallel world. For this project RAS developed a custom procedural coherent noise implementation by utilizing beyond classical measurements for computing surflets. These data and algorithms allow Anadol to speculate alternative modalities inside the most sophisticated computer available, and create new quantum noise-generated datasets as building blocks of these modalities. These pieces are both inspired by and a speculation of the many-worlds interpretation in quantum physics – a theory that holds that there are many parallel worlds that exist at the same space and time as our own. “I am really inspired by simulations in general. In my artwork, you can see two types of algorithms: one is a noise algorithm which creates landscapes, the other is for fluid dynamics. I am extremely inspired by water, in life, and nature. So I wanted to know what would happen if an AI could learn how to move in water, and what could it create? And how would it feel, when a machine creates a sensory experience? Are we getting closer to how we might watch water in the sea? Of course not, but the attempt is in the simulation.„ —Refik Anadol

From an edition of 8 Image size ⋅ 84cm H x 200cm W . Back in the shoegazing years, when I was studying at the old Hornsey School of Art, there was a beautiful surge of guitar fuelled wall of noise bands on the scene, one of whom, Chapterhouse, released a track entitled Breather. It’s a piece that’s stuck with me ever since. Breather was drawn a little while after Eight...

From an edition of 8 Image size ⋅ 94cm H x 120cm W ⋅ 3 panels . Le Klint Studio is an inspiration to anyone who loves paper folding, contemporary design, and light. So, of course, I couldn’t resist making a series of origami like geometries for a new set of works in 2015. Le Klint Studio, to my mind, are particularly well known for their folded paper pendant shades, contemporary designs which are as beautiful as they are ubiquitous. The image I made is not an identikit line work, more an homage based around some of the origami like folds they use, with the addition of colour glazes and offset transparencies. I've also added a grid like structure of darkly shaded lines and accents, that brings the geometry to life. The first piece I drew, ACDH (acid house...

The work is individually signed and numbered verso, with both a unique catalogue raisonné number and the edition number for guaranteed authenticity. From an edition of 12 Image size ⋅ 88cm H x 124cm W . Drawing Flow was a breakthrough moment for me. It was the first piece that spoke directly to the idea of drawing glass, using translucent glazes, and layers of transparencies, that in some way capture the excitement of seeing a great piece of studio glass, or contemporary stained glass...
