Amy Cheng
"We Spin a World" Multicolored limited edition print of a painting by Amy Cheng

2014

About the Item

"WE SPIN A WORLD" is one of a limited edition of 30 prints of an original oil painting on canvas by Amy Cheng. The painting is part of a Mandala Series she produced in the 2010's. The image in this print features hula-hoop-like decorated tubular circles around an off-center nucleus, an area that is comparatively small but seems to reference a compressed but expanding cosmos. The transparency of what appears to be a lace-like material held in place by two surrounding strands of pearls allows the image to reference materials we associate with gems and satin-like fabric or brocade. Sumptuous, intricate, ornamented, these prints are richly referential — they call to mind a range of associations from mandalas, the cosmos, cells, lace, brocade and more. The artist feels aligned with the long history of geometric and floral ornamentation the Far Eastern, Middle Eastern, and European craftsmen have long employed. They did so with the implicit understanding that pattern and repetition, which are endemic in nature, are primal in their rhythmic connection to the human nervous system. The image size is 23" H x 38" W and is surrounded by a 3" white border which helps the image breathe when framed (the white border can be replaced by a matte). Unframed prints ship rolled up in a tube.
