About the Item
Unframed.
(Three 24 x 18 inch separate hand-printed cyanotypes on paper, total 24 x 54 inches/ 137 x 61 cm)
These are 3 unframed unique hand-printed monotypes on heavy cotton cold-press watercolor paper with a slight texture. They have straight cut edges, not deckled edges. If matted and framed in 30h x 24w” frames, they will span 6 linear feet .The leaves in these cyanotypes are a pale blue and not a white. The different shades of blue are created by exposing some parts of the light-sensitive paper to sunlight longer than others through multiple exposures. The background is a French blue (not a super dark navy blue) and the leaves are a pale aqua. (See the last closeup photo of the edge of one print laid on top of white paper to see the contrast).
Cyanotypes are a kind of 19th century alternative (cameraless) photographic process. While traditional cyanotypes are a navy blue background with sharp white silhouettes, I prefer to manipulate the process to achieve varying softer shades of blue instead, rather like aquatint etchings. All my botanical cyanotypes are one-of-kind monotypes using actual fresh-cut branches from trees in my garden or fallen trees in the woods where I hike.
This particular species of tree is a Dancing Peacock Full Moon Fernleaf Japanese Maple or in Latin, Acer Japonicum Aconitifolium. The Japanese name is Mai Kujaku. There is no etched copper plate, no carved wood block, no printing press and no ink to be able to reproduce these images. There is no film negative either. Each is a unique, hand-printed lensless photograph made using real plants from my own garden. They will ship flat in one box, stacked on top of each other.
SHIPPING: Free shipping to United States, Europe, UK in a wide tube. Both monotypes will ship rolled together in one 6-inch wide (15cm) heavy cardboard tube.

Christine So is an American printmaker, photographer and painter living in the hills across the bay from her hometown, San Francisco. She is best known for her blue and white cyanotype photographs of forests shrouded in fog. The Foggy Woods series is ever-growing as the artist continually hikes these hills which are often foggy at dawn. She explores radically different ways to use this antique photographic medium with and without out a camera. At times her blue prints look like screen prints. At others like abstract watercolors. Besides printing photographs from negatives, botanicals using entire branches, altering the chemical recipe to obtain novel colors, and creating abstract cyanotypes of deliberate patterns, she also paints images using the light-sensitive solution and prints a pattern within them. These last works she calls “cyanotype paintings”. The multiple-day process depends on being able to see while painting in a dark room so as to not expose the light-sensitive painted silhouette before it’s time. She named her series of botanical paintings which have a fine blue and white pattern “Delft Garden” after the Dutch painted porcelain. - The Pond II (hand-printed botanical cyanotype, 24 x 18 inches)Located in Oakland, CAUnframed. Although this looks like an etching or block print, it is a cyanotype, a type of 19th century cameraless photography also known as blueprints or sun prints. No ink or paint was involved and no photo negative either. This monotype was made by carefully arranging hundreds of individual blades of fresh-cut native Californian wild grass. The species of tall marsh grass is called Gray Rush or the latin name juncus patens. It is native to Northern California and grows in local wetlands. If not cut back, it it would grow over 4 feet tall. Every one of Christine So...Category

- Evening Shade Triptych (3 hand-printed botanical cyanotypes, 30 x 22 in. each)Located in Oakland, CAUnframed. These are three separate unframed unique works on heavy 100% cotton Arches watercolor paper with deckled edges. They will ship stacked together flat in one large flat cardboard box. Each measures 30h x 22w inches. Cyanotypes are a kind of 19th century alternative (cameraless) photographic process. While traditional cyanotypes are a navy blue background with sharp white silhouettes, the artist manipulates the process to achieve multiple softer shades of blue instead, rather like aquatint etchings. The leaves of this print are pale blue and not white. the leaves in these are a bit darker while the background is a bit lighter than another similar size of triptych listed called "Spring Night Triptcyh." The prints in the other botanical triptych have a higher dark/light contrast as those were printed on textured (more absorbent) cold press watercolor paper rather than smooth hot press paper like this one. This is a double exposure cyanotype. The different shades of blue are created by exposing some parts of the light-sensitive paper to sunlight longer than others. All Christine So...Category
