Florence Montmare
Long exposure figurative Photography: 'Illuminations No. 6'

2002

About the Item

'Illuminations started in 2002 when a relationship was slowly falling apart. While trying to save it, we rented a large stylish apartment in Stockholm, and then later one in Arles, France, hoping that a change of scene would have a positive effect. The new spaces made the distance between us more acute, and the inevitable break even more obvious. The ritual of making one photograph each night became crucial to me. I left the camera shutter open for 3 to 8 hours in a darkened bedroom, and as the morning light arrived I interrupted the exposure. It is a private journal, documenting time and memory, where present meets past.' Born in Vienna to Swedish and Greek parents and raised in Stockholm, Florence Montmare has an MBA in Design Management from Linnaeus University, Sweden and studied at the School of Visual Arts. A graduate of International Center of Photography, New York, she collaborated with artist Sam Samore from 2001 to 2004, resulting in photographs, films, books, exhibitions, installations and performances internationally. Examples of projects include the feature film Mirror of Happiness, exhibitions at the Centre National de Photographie, PS1/MOMA and a perfume installation/performance at the Foundation Cartier. Florence works collaboratively and across disciplines, using a transparent process where experimentation and discussions are central to the work. With a background in dance, music, painting and photography, she makes images, films/videos, writings and has created installations, exhibitions, performances, happenings, salons, TV programs, books and catalogs. Between 2010 and 2012 she was an artist in residence at Chashama and in 2015, 2016 and 2017 at Ingmar Bergman's Estate in Faro, Sweden. Florence currently lives in New York City with her husband Ambrose & dog Pony.

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...

  • Pointe - underwater photograph - archival pigment print 24x18"
    By Alex Sher
    Located in Beverly Hills, CA
Four years ago I wrecked my sailboat and was self-medicating with vodka at a Russian restaurant when I suddenly noticed a cute girl hanging from the ceiling right above my glass. She was not only beautiful, she was a dancer too, and she agreed to model for me underwater. Two days later, if you stopped by my pool you’d see a fully dressed ballerina with her hands underwater and me wriggling at the bottom around her dance e shoes. I kept asking her to tie and untie her pointe hypnotized by the small hands entwined in ribbons and light. I took quite a few pictures that day. This one is my favorite. Original gallery quality archival pigment print signed by the artist. Limited edition of 24 This photo has been recently published in: Moevir (2022 France), Photohouse Magazine (2022 Denmark), Redwood Art...
