Humans are complex. We are made up of many different layers, oftentimes unwilling to expose the deepest ones. Inevitably creating barriers.
Using materials such as translucent paper, gauze, and paint —I hide elements of objects, or of the human body, bringing to the forefront their layers within my photographs and highlighting the layers that make up a person.
In this manner, I use the skin, our most exterior layer, the organ responsible for all our tactile sensations —the layer that allows us to feel, our first barrier hiding away our deeper inner selves.
Skin becomes a canvas of scars, filled with memories, pieces of our past stories, of everything that has been stamped upon our bodies and souls. Impressions, which in some cases find their way to inhabit the surface of our bodies, showcasing our interior, which is invisible to the naked eye.
I direct attention, a focus, into parts of my body, with the purpose of showcasing myself in depth, exposing my traces, and evincing that each person is unique. Every person is a book with unique and different content.
Then, slowly, I introduce elements that are mine, little intimate pieces which narrate the chapters of my history. My move to another country where I found both strength and confusion. An entrenchment of my roots, yet a rebuilding of a new life. A paradox of emotions, yearning for what I left behind, the generation of new memories, the fulfillment of dreams, femininity, age, aging, death. I reflect on my experiences, my past, present, and what my future may hold.
I use personal objects, small sculptures of my creations. Objects I either brought from Peru or that remind me of Peru and of my many memories. I use objects that have grown in their magnitude and significance to me, since today they are the very protagonists responsible for forging my current story, and that have a special meaning.
My hope is that through a delicate lens, my images invoke reflection, imagination, and remembrance. That they create a questioning of one’s own personal and intimate needs, creating a harmony of images open for interpretation.
This is my story. But could be anyone’s story.
