The photogram series “Trees” by Regina Hügli focuses on the phenomenon of ramification, in other words, the way a tree limb forks into two branches. Individual types of branching and budding are different, yet can be observed in the same way in all organic growth processes. From blood and nerve pathways to lichens, fungal rhizomes, and corals, all forms of life have processes of ramification. The ebb and flow of fluids in organic tissues, the established forms of species and the external circumstances acting on organisms lead to the expression and configuration that can be seen again in the bifurcations and spontaneous inception of budding.
It is the flow of information and life on which all growth is based that particularly interests Regina Hügli. She places it in a setting with bright colors against a dark background in large-format, rather abstract photograms. For many years, the artist has been working with the themes of water and circulation. In the “Trees” series, she purposely allows the visual ambiguity of the abstract photograms to take its course; some of them look like pictures of flowing water. Hügli collected especially interestingly forked branches and twigs, such as driftwood from the Danube, which is particularly simple and shapely due to the time it has spent in the water. The multifarious gradients and nuances of the color photograms are created by different filters used during the exposure process of the photo paper – an elaborate technique that the artist developed herself in the darkroom.
