The painter and etcher William Henry Lippincott was born in Philadelphia, where he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. After studying in Paris under Leon Bonnat he returned to the United States in 1882 and established a studio in Portland, Maine. Lippincott soon moved to New York City and he became a professor of painting at the National Academy of Design. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy, the National Academy, the American Watercolor Society, the Society of American Etchers, the Century Association, and the New York Etching Club, and won a medal at the Saint Louis Exposition in 1904.
