Exhibitions of the 1922 group were held at the New Gallery in Shandwick Place from 1923 until 1928. Housed in a complimentary frame, 25 inches by 22 inches framed and in good condition. David W Gunn (1865-1935). As a contemporary of the Scottish Colourists, Gunn shared similar values in their love of light and strong colour, but is in many ways more bold for his work is less constrained by mainstream conventions and the influence of patrons. His choice of subject reflects the direct influence of post-impressionism in its use of pure colour applied directly to the surface without preparatory line. Born near Thurso in Caithness, he was commissioned into the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders along with fellow artist, David MacBeth Sutherland. We know surprisingly little of his life, but following his return from wartime France, he appears to have settled in Dunfermline where he continued to work. Gunn was a founder member of the 1922 Group that consisted of a group of artists associated with the Edinburgh College of Art including William Crozier, John Maxwell and William Gillies. Exhibitions of the 1922 group were held at the New Gallery in Shandwick Place from 1923 until 1928. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy and a number of his paintings are included in the permanent collection of Pittencreiff House Museum, Dunfermline including a wonderful work titled 'The last Mooring of the Ajax'.
