About the Item

Alphons (Alfons) Müller (Swiss, * 24.8.1898 Mitlödi, † 8.6.1955 Biel) Wrath of the Wind - Oil on artist board, ca. 58.5 x 50 cm - Frame, ca. 71 x 62 cm - Signed and dated (19)40 top left Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Alphons Müller lived and worked in the watch industries in Biel/Bienne in Switzerland up to about 1933. He then decided to become a full time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955. Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pub and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching images - especially during the war. In the late thirties he meet his two loyal patrons, the baker Werner Gass and the pharmacist Christian Kipfer who pre-financed and collected Müller's work. From that point in time on Müller's output increased considerably , he was able to travel and his work matured stylistically with thick layered expressive images. After a period during which Müller's paintings were virtually unsaleable, interest in his high quality work is now steadily increasing and at auction good paintings by Müller have fetched well in to four digits. The man could paint and I believe his prices have yet a way to go. I am offering here an evocative scene of a bent tree defying the elements painted during the second world war. It has never been on the market and came out of Christian Kipfers 's collection, Switzerland. I am Adrian Stuart Grond trading as ASGrond - Art & Antiques. Passionate collector, purveyor and artist. Here on 1stdibs I am offering Fine Art that I have collected over the last thirty years. Phantoms of Time - Things of the past - for you to add to your future and so enriching your life’s tapestry.
