Adriaan de Braekeleer
A kitchen interior - Adriaan de Braekeleer (1818-1904)

1862

About the Item

Oil on canvas Signed lower left: "Adriaan De Braekeleer, 1862" In Adriaan de Braekeleer's painting, the rustic charm of a kitchen interior comes alive with the warmth of a scene steeped in domesticity and bounty. At the heart of this captivating tableau stands a man, the epitome of rustic vitality, offering forth the spoils of his successful hunt. De Braekeleer's brushwork captures the interplay of light and shadow within the kitchen, illuminating the textures and hues of the scene. The warm tones infuse the setting with a sense of coziness, inviting viewers to revel in the simple pleasures of hearth and home. Adriaan De Braekeleer was a Belgian artist. He was a nephew and pupil of painter Ferdinand De Braekeleer (1792-1883). To avoid name confusion with his uncle, he used the name Adriaan. He chose an artistic career possibly encouraged by his uncle's successful example and the favourable prospects this profession offered him. His brother Jacobus Joannes De Braekeleer became a sculptor. He painted genre scenes, mainly interiors of inns, kitchens and workshops such as smithies. His oeuvre is situated within romantic realism. When a tiger escaped from the Antwerp zoo on 7 June 1868, Adriaan de Braekeleer shot it. The artist made a painting of this heroic act, which is kept in the Zoo.
