Thomas Hammer
Delta Muscae - Black and White Painting

2020

About the Item

New York artist Thomas Hammer is known for his motion-filled black and white ink works on paper. His artworks, created with a unique tool fusing a squeegee and a brush, are inspired by the spontaneity and vim of post-war action painting, though they employ a unique vocabulary of mark-making. He creates a sense of depth through the variety of textures that vary between smooth and flowing, staccato and rhythmic. The physical process of creating his ink paintings involves a degree of performance. The brushwork requires gestures that activate the body like a dance. He works fast and relies on instinct to achieve the right balance of spontaneity and control. This monochrome 42-inch by 32-inch original painting is created with ink on paper. This one-of-a-kind artwork is not framed. It is signed by the artist on the back of the artwork and can be installed horizontally as well as vertically. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and global shipping are available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery is included. Thomas Hammer was born in 1985 and grew up in Ithaca, New York. He completed his BS at Cornell University. Hammer started his career as an interaction designer at digital agencies in New York City. He says of his work, “I aim to create emotionally impactful works that explore the relationship between human activity, our natural surroundings, and the possibility of disaster. Though non-representational, my works are inspired by photography—particularly images of vast landscapes, outer space, and major meteorological events. My work alternates from organic and spontaneous to strictly linear and mechanical. I aim to balance these forces to create work that is chaotic but still controlled. To me, a successful piece is viewed as a window to an imagined space rather than as a physical object.” His action paintings have been published in Architectural Digest, CoEval Magazine, and Lines Magazine and have been exhibited internationally. His work has been acquired by collectors around the world. His one-of-a-kind original artworks have been exhibited at Kunstwarenhaus Zurich, art fairs in New York and Los Angeles, and at the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair with Artspace Warehouse. The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow. He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle. Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky. On the other hand, a sign can...
