What's It For, Original Acrylic Painting on Canvas, 2021

2021

About the Item

Artist Commentary: A piece about the "stuff" we buy. What's it for? Is it worth it? How do we affect nature with these decisions? Shape shifts between resembling an old ship and a modern cargo ship. Keywords: waves, light, day, abstract, water, sea, ocean, coast, west, environment, sustainable, wave, natural, nature, mixed media, sky, sun, bright, float, horizon, human, consumption, stuff, ship, cargo, boat, navigate Artist Biography: Dyanna lets material and her coastal roots drive her creative process. She explores the complicated human relationship with the natural world and each other. Dyanna often incorporates found material into her work to represent the human element and influence on things. Ecological consciousness lies close to her heart. Dyanna's process starts well before a blank canvas, noticing the colors and shapes of life around her. She collects pieces from her surroundings to use as material and to keep her attuned to her environment. Dyanna curates her materials and connects them by colors, shapes, lines and textures. She matches up materials as they are, letting the materials lead the way. Dyanna works on small-format pieces in-between larger ones, to keep her mind moving and ideas flowing. These pieces are meditative for her.We tune out thousands of objects around us because we don't have a current need or they don't seem important. Sun-bleached plastic, the inside of an envelope, these materials are the foundation for Dyanna's work, whether they make it into the finished piece or not. Through her clever use of disposable goods, she urges the viewer to change the traditional context of “trash” in their minds. She challenges her own consumption habits in the process. The waste of man made materials invades our landscapes, it invades her work in the same way.Acutely conscious of the consumerism cycle and it's impact on our environment, Dyanna would rather scavenge for her materials. In this, she encourages others to do the same. Dyanna adds environmental elements like waves, the sun and moon to a lot of her pieces. This helps us connect to the environment while viewing her work. Her signature sawblade waves act as a connection between the industrial world and the natural world. Water also symbolizes hope in a land of drought and fire.By adding playful colors, shapes and elements, Dyanna's aesthetic makes issues we obsess over, don't want to face or feel overwhelmed by, such as climate change and societal formed norms, more digestible. She hopes to help us comprehend climate change, spark awareness, curiosity and mindfulness.

Artist's statement: "Separate from the tar paintings I have been doing, I am creating a series of work in which I am channeling some of the things I have always loved about Cy Twombly along with qualities of a painting I saw in a local collection by a Cuban painter that I really admired and have thought about a lot since. Of course both share a graffiti quality; Twombly was the first to work with a sort of automatic drawing, beginning in the 1950s, and what he did opened up this new language for countless painters. You still see traces of it in so much contemporary art. Antoni Tapies has been a big influence on me as well, and you can see some of him in this work as well. I limited the color palette in this one as a sort of exercise in discipline, since it is easy to let color get away from you in a painting like this one. There are areas of three-dimensional paint that help flatten the picture plane and restrict the eye from reading depth into the painting; they function in the same way as Barnett Newman's 'zips' and Susan Rothenberg's lines across some of her horse images...

(Comes float-framed behind glass.) Artist's Statement: "I was working on my "Gridish" paintings (you can find them in a search on the term "Gridish" on this site) when I became fascinated with certain materials I was working with - a new type of super-flat, super-black paint; powdered graphite; and iron oxide pigment. I had a small canvas ready to go, and shifted my attention to concentrating on just one of the rectangular forms I had been using in the Gridish series, and applying these materials in a way that pleased me. That sort of industrial sheen on the surface of the rectangle is really beautiful to me. This was a second I made, on paper. Quite obviously the mood given off by these works is greatly different from the colorful Gridish paintings that spawned them. My daughter, studying design at RISD, said she found the pic I...
