Nancy Cohen "Reversing Falls'

About the Item

Nancy Cohen Reversing Falls, 2018 paper pulp on handmade paper 49 x 53 in. This original abstract artwork by Nancy Cohen is constructed in her unique signature style of working with pigmented paper pulp to create sculptural works on paper. This piece features swirling lines and organic shapes on a brilliant blue background. "My drawings are constructed sculpturally. I begin by making pigmented papers and then assemble them, still wet, in a quilt-like fashion; later I draw on these constructed surfaces with various densities of paper pulp. The wet pulp on the dried sheets causes a buckling on the surface that appears very much like stitching. The finished works speak to the physicality of the body and simultaneously evoke an intimate sense of touch, in a way akin to being in nature experiencing both vastness and quiet moments of focus. My working methods allow an implication of the body in the work—its touch and tenderness, its frailty and endurance. It is my goal that in this work, as in our own lives, elements hang in the balance, each one necessary, vulnerable, beautiful and above all interdependent." -Nancy Cohen

  • View of Castle of Vianen, Batestein, Dutch Golden Age, Schouman, Old Master Art
    By Aert Schouman
    Located in Greven, DE
Though he is most celebrated today for his extraordinary work as an artist of ornithological and zoological subject matters, Schouman was also a prolific documenter of landscape in his native Holland. The present drawing, which depicts a view of the Castel of Vianen, fits securely into a corpus of drawings Schouman produced on the same scale and in the same distinctive combination of media, examples of which are today housed in the collection of the Koninklijk Zeeuwsch Genootschap der Wetenschappen, Middelburg. Castle Batestein (also called Batenstein ) is a castle disappeared from the Netherlands . It was built on the banks of the Lek in the small town of Vianen, then in the province of South Holland (now in the province of Utrecht ). The castle was burned down in 1696 and then demolished. Remains only the Hofpoort (or castle gate...
