Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick
Medusa Augury (Round Portrait Drawing in Blue Pastel by Kahn & Selesnick)

2018

About the Item

Circular portrait drawing in pastel and conte crayon of a beautiful Medusa Portrait is made on handmade Indian cotton paper 22 inch diameter Signed, verso About the work: In the face of a turbulent political and environmental crisis, the artists make their own appeal to change the future with a series of circular drawings on handmade paper in pastel and conte crayon. Panogolin Bonaparte and Medusa are among the drawings that illustrate the transformation of humans into animals, a fantasy of mankind’s integration with nature. These are presented as votive offerings to the Gods as a last attempt to bargain for a more hopeful future. About the artists: Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick are a collaborative artist team who have been working together since they met while attending art school at Washington University in St. Louis in the early 1980s. Both were born in 1964, in New York City and London respectively. They work primarily in the fields of photography and installation art, specializing in fictitious histories set in the past or future. These may include: documentary-style panoramic and square photographs that combine absurdist fantasy and bogus anthropology; elaborately crafted artifact, costumes and sculpture, often constructed of unlikely materials such as bread or fur, painting and drawings ranging from large scale works on plaster to pages of conceptual doodling. Kahn lives in Ghent NY, and Selesnick in Rhinebeck NY. Their current work features the recreation of the Truppe Fledermaus's Memory Theatre of 1932 with its full complement of Batfolk, Greenmen, Rope-Slingers, and Death-Dancers in all their Carnivalesque glory. Kahn & Selesnick have participated in over 100 solo and group exhibitions worldwide and have work in over 20 collections, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Houston Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution. In addition, they have published 3 books with Aperture Press, Scotlandfuturebog, City of Salt, and Apollo Prophecies. Their most recent book, 100 Views of the Drowning World, is available now from Candela Books.

60 x 48 inches black ballpoint pen drawing on cotton Arches paper. Hung with two dark red powder coated aluminum bars. This large, vertical black and white ballpoint pen drawing was made by Linda Newman Boughton in 2011. The dramatic yet modern drawing on strong cotton Arches paper is a depiction of a notorious photograph taken by Mathew Brady of Nimrod Burke, an African American solider who was born into a slavery and went on to fight in the American Civil War as First Sergeant of the 36th Ohio Infantry. The extremely detailed portrait is made solely with black ballpoint pen. Under close inspection one can see the multitude of sweeping and crosshatching lines the artist used to create the portrait. The work is signed in the lower right corner. It is installed with two dark red powder coated aluminum bars so one can suspend the work from a wall without having it framed behind glass. There is a traction strip to grip the paper along the inside of each aluminum bar. About the work: Linda Newman Boughton’s life-sized ballpoint pen drawings of notorious Civil War soldiers...
