The Background:
There are several anecdotes that describe Signac as an artist indissolubly linked to the sea path.
Painting on the banks of the Seine, towards Asnières, he meets Vincent van Gogh. From August to October 1887, Signac moves to the south of France. He buys a new boat and spends the summer of 1888 on the north coast of Brittany, then the following year on the Mediterranean coast and visits Van Gogh, interned in Arles. From this period are the painted marinas in Cassis, on the Provencal coast.
On March 29, 1891, Seurat died at the age of thirty, and this deeply mourned Signac, who therefore left Paris for the Breton coasts. In the following months he paints the Marinas of Concarneau and the Femme se coiffant, one of his masterpieces.
In 1892 he left Brittany for Saint-Tropez, a small fishing port that was the first artist to discover: he spent a few months there with his wife and mother, who he would portray. This is an important period because it marks a turning point in his work. He discovers the watercolor technique and from 1894 he gives up painting en plein air. His works are increasingly colorful and the brushstrokes wider.

Paul Signac
also known as: Paul Victor Jules Signac He was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who, with Georges Seurat, helped develop the artistic technique Pointillism. The Mediterranean coast is a central theme across Signac's paintings. He purchased a house in the south of France in the village of Collioure or at St. Tropez where is invited his friends to visit.
Signac loved sailing and began to travel in 1892, sailing a small boat to almost all the ports of France.
As president of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, from 1908 until his death, Signac encouraged younger artists by exhibiting the controversial works of the Fauves and the Cubists. He was the first patron to buy a painting by Matisse.
