August Hagborg
Quiet Contemplation: Rural Serenity in Hagborg's Watercolor

c. 1910-20

About the Item

The artwork we present is a rare watercolor by the distinguished Swedish artist August Hagborg, painted in the later part of his career between 1910 and 1920. This watercolour is a departure from Hagborg's often-seen beach scenes with mussel pickers and instead offers a glimpse into a serene, pastoral moment. The scene is set against a timber house, with a man and a woman standing alongside, their gazes directed away from the viewer, which invites contemplation about the story behind their distant stares. Watercolors by Hagborg are rare, making this piece particularly special. Its fine details suggest a mastery of the medium, likely honed over the years of his extensive career. A written letter from Göteborgs Konstmuseum, dated to the 1940s, suggests a later date for this piece. August Hagborg, born on May 26, 1852, in Gothenburg and passed away on April 30, 1921, in Paris, was a renowned figure in the art world. His education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm from 1871 to 1874 placed him among peers who would rise to prominence, such as Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn. Moving to Paris in the fall of 1875, Hagborg initially painted within the costume genre before finding his niche in coastal landscapes that garnered him accolades and recognition. Hagborg's success was punctuated by his 1879 painting "Low Water at the English Channel," which won a medal and secured his position as an artist of note. He continued to paint scenes from the Swedish coasts during his summer visits and later from Dalarna after 1914. His travels outside France were limited, but he did visit Devon, England, in 1884 and Italy later in life. Honoured with a knighthood in the Order of Vasa in 1883 and as a Commander Second Class of the Order of the North Star in 1908, Hagborg's work is represented in major museums such as the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and Musée d'Orsay in Paris. watercolor on paper unframed 13.4 x 9.8 inches (34 x 25 cm) framed 17.7 x 14.2 inches (45 x 36 cm) Provenance: A Swedish private collection.

  • Coach and horses at full speed, Paris, Boulogne-sur-Seine
    Located in Stockholm, SE
This small watercolor painting by Anna Palm de Rosa, titled "Coach and horses at full speed, Boulogne-sur-Seine," is a vibrant and dynamic piece that captures a moment of speed and elegance from the past. The scene is set in what was known then as Boulogne-sur-Seine, now Boulogne-Billancourt, prior to its name change in 1926. The artwork is only like a postcard and depicts a horse-drawn carriage in full gallop, stirring up a cloud of dust along the gravel path. This sense of motion is further emphasized by one of the ladies on the carriage, who is seen clutching her hat, a detail that adds a personal touch to the scene and underscores the speed at which they are traveling. The artist's ability to capture such a fleeting moment, with the horses' hooves barely touching the ground and the dust cloud swirling around, is a testament to her skill and the liveliness of her compositions. • A Pastel Painted 1886 Called A Summer's Day on Hornbæk Beach
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Frants Henningsen (1850-1908) Denmark A Summer's Day on Hornbæk Beach, 1886 pastel on canvas unframed 41 x 33 cm (16.14 x 12.99 inches) framed 56 x 49 cm (22.05 x 19.29 inches) hand made oak frame by Stockholms Bildhuggeri Provenance: A Swedish private collection Comparable sales: Christie's London British and European Art, 15 jul 2021 Lot 130, Frants Henningsen - A Summer's Day on Hornbæk Beach 1884 Price realised 43,750 GBP (605,000 SEK) Essay: We are pleased to present a striking pastel by the Danish artist, Frants Henningsen (1850-1908), titled "A Summer's Day on Hornbæk Beach" dated 1886. The scene is from Hornbæk Beach in Denmark, featuring a beach with some pooled water, a few green grass plants, followed by the sea with sailboats, and land visible on the horizon. The water reflection in the puddle on the beach and in the sea is exceptionally beautiful, reflecting the sky, which has a few clouds. This is a motif that the artist revisited several times during the 1880s, including a larger oil painting executed in 1884, sold at Christie's in 2021, and another one from 1883 in the museum collection: The Hirschsprung Collection, Copenhagen. Our pastel is undoubtedly the brightest of those we could find; it is strikingly beautiful and in exceptionally good condition. The artwork comes in a beautiful handmade oak gold frame by Stockholms Bildhuggeri. About Frants Henningsen: Frants Peter Diderik Henningsen was a Danish painter, illustrator, and professor. His paintings often depict unfortunate occurrences in the lives of middle-class people living in Copenhagen during challenging times. Although connected with Denmark's more traditional realist school, he faced criticism from some of his more reactionary contemporaries, especially Karl Madsen, who objected to his appointment as a professor at the Academy in 1887. Erik Henningsen, also an artist, was his younger brother. Henningsen graduated from Borgerdyd School in Christianshavn, attended C.V. Nielsen's drawing school, and then completed his studies at the Danish Academy in 1875. He studied at Léon Bonnat's school in Paris from 1877 to 1878 and traveled to Spain with Peder Severin Krøyer, Frans Schwartz...
